Signify and Boston University validate effectiveness of Signify’s UV-C light sources on inactivating the virus that causes COVID-19

Wednesday, 09 September 2020 by fabio12

June 16, 2020

  • Test results show that the virus could no longer be detected after seconds of exposure
  • Signify to make its UV-C lighting technology widely available to other lighting companies
  • Signify has been at the forefront of UV technology for more than 35 years

Eindhoven, the Netherlands – Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, together with the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL)1 at Boston University in the US have conducted research that validates the effectiveness of Signify’s UV-C light sources on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Since the start of the SARS CoV-2 pandemic, Dr. Anthony Griffiths, Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine and his team have been working on developing tools to support scientific advancement in this field.2 During their research they have treated inoculated material with different doses of UV-C radiation coming from a Signify light source and assessed the inactivation capacity under various conditions. The team applied a dose of 5mJ/cm2, resulting in a reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus of 99% in 6 seconds. Based on the data, it was determined that a dose of 22mJ/cm2 will result in a reduction of 99.9999% in 25 seconds.3

Our test results show that above a specific dose of UV-C radiation, viruses were completely inactivated: in a matter of seconds we could no longer detect any virus.”

Dr. Anthony Griffiths Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine
“We’re very excited about these findings and hope that this will accelerate the development of products that can help limit the spread of COVID-19,” he added.
Signify is the leader in UV-C light sources and has been at the forefront of UV technology for more than 35 years. It has a proven track record of innovation in UV-C lighting, which is designed, manufactured and installed in line with the highest safety standards.
I’m very happy about the fruitful cooperation with Boston University in the fight against the coronavirus.
Boston University has validated the effectiveness of our light sources as a preventive measure

for companies and institutions as they seek ways to provide virus-free environments.”

Eric Rondolat,CEO of Signify
“Given the potential of the technology to aid the fight against the coronavirus, Signify will not keep the technology for its exclusive use but make it available to other lighting companies. To service the growing need for disinfection we will increase our production capacity multifold in the coming months,” he added. 1 The NEIDL is a state-of-the-art research facility that encompasses significant containment laboratories at Biosafety Level -2, -3, and -4 2 Dr. Griffiths’ team develops vaccines and therapeutics for Risk Group 3 and 4 viruses, which include organisms that can cause serious or deadly diseases in humans 3 Research variables are available upon request

Other specification we are follow:

  • ISO 15858:2016 specifies minimum human safety requirements for the use of UVC lamp devices. It is applicable to in-duct UVC systems, upper-air in room UVC systems, portable in-room disinfection UVC devices, and any other UVC devices which may cause UVC exposure to humans. It is not applicable to UVC products used for water disinfection.
  • W.H.O. World Health Organization, directive for employers and workers . COVID-19 spread is emotionally challenging for many people, changing day-to-day life in unprecedented ways. All sections of society – including employers and employees – should play a role to protect themselves and each other and help prevent further spread of the disease. WHO is providing advice and updated information on COVID-19, and on how employers can protect their employees, what measures they should take in the workplace and other related factors.

HOW DOES THE ULTRAVIOLET (UVC) LIGHT WORK ?

Tuesday, 08 September 2020 by fabio12

TechnologyClean ultraviolet lamps use an artificial source of Ray UV-C to sterilize objects, air or water. The wavelength of TechnologyClean ultraviolet lights, is at 253.7 nm is the most effective in killing microorganisms.

UV-C radiation penetrates the air, effectively reducing the number of microorganisms present in the air and killing them on surfaces, for example is in use in hospitals, restaurants, offices, hotels etc.

Sunlight contains some ultraviolet (UV) radiation even simply hanging the laundry outdoors on bright and sunny days takes advantage of the ultraviolet light present in the sunlight.

Although the amount of UV rays from the sun is small, these rays can help kill bacteria on clothing. However, the exposure of people and oneself to ultraviolet light should be avoided, due to the damage to the eyes and skin it would cause.

For this reason we offer a sensor for each lamp which close automatically the ultraviolet light

in presence of any kind of movement around the lamp or with trigger.

New York City will test ultraviolet light to kill coronavirus on subways and buses

Thursday, 16 July 2020 by fabio12

New York City will be testing out ultraviolet lamps that can kill the coronavirus on subways and buses. The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) announced that the $1 million pilot program will begin its first phase on some subways, buses and other facilities early next week.
About 150 dual-headed mobile devices from Denver-based startup Puro Lighting will be deployed at stations and rail yards to see how effective the UVC technology is in those settings, the MTA said. After evaluation, a second phase will expand to the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North commuter lines.
“The UV light that will be used in the current overnight subway and bus disinfection program is very efficient in killing the virus that is responsible for COVID-19,” Brenner said. “What we are doing here is reducing the level of the virus in subways, and therefore decreasing the risk of anybody catching COVID-19 on the subway.”
